KUNSTVEREIN ST. PAULI (DE)

Kunstverein St. Pauli was founded 2006 in Hamburg. The seven members Axel Loytved, Felix Franz, Franziska Nast, Kai Kaste, Malte Struck, Sebastian Rohrbeck und Tobias Scholz are coming from different backgrounds (art, design architecture, gardening, media science and sociology). For a period of three years they shared a flat at Reeperbahn 83/Hamburg. A residency was announced which offered artists a one-week-stay including a coffee-machine and a bed. After this time the hosted artist was asked to give a presentation of his work. Specially designed furniture was build to easily transform the kitchen into a bar and to use the rooms in the second floor for exhibitions, screenings and talks.
The residency program ended after moving out in 2009. In summer 2010 an oversea container was used to organise a series of events located in the habour of Hamburg.

For the next year a tour in cooperation with project spaces, art institutions and festivals is intended. A selection of artists will fill the container with artworks and their materials. At each stopping place all things in the container will be used by the artists to develope new ways to install and show their work in a different space and context. The entirely black painted container will function as a bar and can be used as a cinema. Following the idea of an airplane "black box" a documentation of the trip will be available inside.

Kunstverein St. Pauli
- for Five thousand generations of birds"

A group of Kunstverein St. Pauli members, will travel together with our entirly black painted High-cube container from Hamburg to Fitjar. For the period of installation time and the festival "Five thousand generations of birds", the container will be placed at the peer where the ferry boats leave the main island and bring the visitors to the exhibition. The container will neither be used as an exhibition space nor be a sculpture or piece of art in itself. It could be better described as a not clearly definable black hole. Besides the social functions of being a meeting-point, a waiting-room and a bar, different formats for presenting artistic works will be developed. The flexible interior can be easily transformed and used for screenings, talks and performances. On a book-shelf artist publications will be available. The Kunstverein St. Pauli Crew will imitate the multifunction of their container and do service at the bar, organize a program in, on and around the container and present their own individual art practice.
